U.S. Women’s Volleyball Gears Up for 2028 Los Angeles Gold
With just over three years until the Olympic flame is lit in Los Angeles, the U.S. women’s volleyball team has already begun their intense preparation cycle with gold firmly in their sights. Coming off strong performances in international competitions throughout early 2025, the team is building momentum as they aim to capture Olympic gold on home soil.
Head coach Karch Kiraly, who recently extended his contract through the 2028 Games, has implemented a comprehensive training strategy focused on blending veteran experience with emerging talent. “We’re in a unique position to develop our program with the home Olympics as our target,” Kiraly stated during a recent training camp in Anaheim. “The opportunity to compete for gold in Los Angeles gives us extra motivation every day in the gym.”
The U.S. team has maintained their world-class status following their Tokyo Olympic triumph, with strong showings in the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Nations League where they finished in the top three. Their consistent performance has kept them ranked among the world’s top three teams as they build toward 2028.
Team captain Madison Kingdon emphasized the importance of the coming preparation period: “Having the Olympics at home creates both privilege and pressure. We’re embracing both and using them as fuel for the work ahead.”
The roster features a balanced mix of Olympic veterans and rising stars. Returning Olympians like libero Justine Wong-Orantes and middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu provide crucial experience, while younger talents like outside hitter Avery Skinner and setter Jenna Gray represent the next generation pushing for roster spots.
USA Volleyball has also expanded its development pipeline, with enhanced collegiate recruitment efforts and improved youth programs across the country. The organization reported a 12% increase in youth volleyball participation since the announcement of the Los Angeles Games, creating a deeper talent pool for future national teams.
“We’re seeing tremendous growth at all levels of the game,” said Jamie Davis, CEO of USA Volleyball. “The excitement around 2028 is already driving participation, which strengthens our developmental pathway and will ultimately benefit our national teams.”
The team’s preparation schedule includes increased domestic training blocks at their Anaheim facility, strategic international competitions, and specialized position-specific camps. The coaching staff has also incorporated advanced analytics and sports science elements, utilizing technology to optimize player development and tactical improvements.
Financially, USA Volleyball secured several major sponsorship deals in early 2025, providing additional resources for the Olympic cycle. These partnerships have enabled expanded training opportunities and increased support staff, addressing areas identified for improvement after previous international competitions.
Fan engagement initiatives have already begun, with community outreach programs connecting team members with volleyball clubs across the country. The “Path to LA” campaign launched in March 2025 aims to build nationwide support while growing the sport’s profile ahead of the home Olympics.
“Playing in front of home crowds will be incredible,” said outside hitter Kathryn Plummer. “We’re already feeling the support from fans, and knowing that energy will be amplified in Los Angeles gives us extra motivation during the tougher training days.”
The team’s collective focus remains fixed on capturing gold in Los Angeles, a goal that would further cement the program’s status as a global volleyball powerhouse. With structured preparation, targeted development, and the advantage of home court, the U.S. women’s volleyball team is positioning themselves as strong contenders for Olympic glory in 2028.
Medical staff are implementing cutting-edge recovery protocols to ensure peak performance throughout the extended preparation period, while mental performance specialists are helping players navigate the unique pressures of a home Olympics.
As the countdown to Los Angeles 2028 continues, the U.S. women’s volleyball team appears increasingly prepared to meet the moment and deliver the gold medal performance that fans across the country are eagerly anticipating.
