The web search giant Google is vigorously advancing its artificial intelligence integration, which indicates a possible fundamental change in internet interaction methods. The company started to integrate AI features into its search engine at the start of 2024, but reached a major development milestone last month with the launch of “AI Mode.” This preview demonstrates how the traditional ten blue links could become outdated in the near future.
Google has received favorable early user feedback for AI Mode which motivates the tech giant to continue upgrading its robotic results with multimodal features. Google’s powerful Gemini large language model (LLM) powers AI Mode through a custom-built version. The firm announced that its custom model can now process multimodal input, which enables users to insert images into search queries through AI Mode.
The search bar in AI Mode will feature a new prominent button for users when this transformative update is implemented. The new feature allows users to take a fresh photo or select an image from their device for convenient uploading. The enhanced Gemini model can analyze visual content from images by utilizing Google Lens’s advanced object recognition capabilities. Google describes Lens as essential because it detects exact objects present in photos that users upload. Detailed contextual information transfers smoothly to AI Mode which then conducts multiple related sub-queries utilizing a method Google calls the “fan-out technique.”
Google uses an illustrative example to demonstrate the potential capabilities of this new functionality. A user shows AI Mode multiple book covers to ask for recommendations on similar books. Google Lens accurately identifies each book title found within the submitted images. The detailed data extracted from these books enables AI Mode to integrate their specific information into its output. The AI provides precise recommendations for related reading options as well as answers to further inquiries stemming from the original book selection.
Google considers AI Mode essential to its plan for keeping its status as the leading portal to internet access. The company has stated in previous communications that traditional search remains essential for users who need direct answers to specific questions. AI Mode offers these users an efficient way to access their desired information more quickly. The first data from Google reveals that AI Mode has led to significant changes in how users conduct their searches. According to the company’s reports, users submit about double the amount of text in AI Mode searches compared to traditional web searches. Google characterizes the increase in detailed queries as a benefit, but it might show that users must provide additional context for AI systems to deliver correct responses.
The launch of AI Mode occurred several weeks ago but many users have still not discovered this feature. Google first released this feature to subscribers of Google One AI Premium, requiring users to activate it through Google Labs. However, the landscape is now shifting. Google declared its plan to extend AI Mode to millions of additional Labs users across the US who aren’t part of its premium AI subscriptions. Despite requiring opt-in from new users, current trends indicate that AI Mode will eventually serve as a standard search option for all users. Google may soon make AI Mode the standard search option for all users based on its current trajectory.
