Nvidia, a company whose AI-accelerating GPUs have become a coveted commodity in recent years, is now exploring a novel application for its powerful hardware: integrating AI directly into the gaming experience. Nvidia introduced its experimental G-Assist AI, which runs locally to optimize PCs and boost gaming performance despite most users currently utilizing their GeForce RTX cards for immersive gameplay experiences.

The Nvidia desktop app’s floating overlay enables users to access an AI assistant, which they can command through text or voice to oversee system performance metrics and adjust system settings.

The initial text installation takes up 3GB of storage space, while activating voice control increases storage requirements by another 3.5GB for a total demand of 6.5 GB. G-Assist requires a GeForce RTX 30-series or 40-series, or 50-series GPU with at least 12GB of VRAM to operate. The efficiency of G-Assist improves as GPU capability increases, with stronger cards delivering quicker operation times. Future support will include laptop GPUs, but current performance may hinder G-Assist’s efficiency.

The current challenge stands as G-Assist operates locally on the GPU because it promises future privacy benefits and lower latency. GPU utilization experienced a noticeable increase when users interacted with the AI model during tests on an RTX 4070. The processing requirements needed to generate responses during inference have a negative effect on simultaneous operations like gaming.

The frame rate of Baldur’s Gate 3 was reduced by about 20% when G-Assist was running at maximum settings. G-Assist may worsen performance problems for systems already having trouble delivering smooth gameplay. Because G-Assist functions more efficiently in non-resource-heavy games, yet requires a high-performance GPU for regular operation.

The experimental status of G-Assist becomes apparent through its intermittent performance delays and software glitches. Most users find that direct system and game settings modifications deliver better efficiency.
