Shooting at Fairfield Spirit Halloween Leaves Tragic Aftermath

Authorities arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with last week’s shooting at a Spirit Halloween store in Fairfield, California. The incident occurred Friday night at the Solano Town Center mall, claiming the life of a pregnant woman and injuring six other people as shoppers prepared for Halloween festivities.

Details of the Attack and Victims

The shooting at around 8:30 p.m. left 31-year-old Constance Hages, who was pregnant, fatally wounded. According to Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall, the teenage suspect will be charged with one count of murder, but could face an additional murder charge because one of the victims was pregnant.

Among those injured, a 16-year-old boy and two men, ages 19 and 32, were listed in critical condition following the attack. A 23-year-old man was hospitalized in stable but critical condition. Two other male victims, ages 19 and 43, received treatment for gunshot wounds and were later released.

Investigation and Arrest

Fairfield police announced at a Monday news conference that the teenage suspect was arrested at his home in Suisun City, a neighboring municipality. Detectives identified the suspect within hours after the incident but refrained from acting immediately to avoid alerting him.

Authorities believe the suspect acted alone in the shooting.

Shooter Targeted Someone Inside the Store

According to Officer Michelle Belyea, the shooter entered the Spirit Halloween store and appeared to target a specific individual before opening fire with a handgun. Chief Marshall mentioned the possibility of a prior altercation between the suspect and one of the victims, suggesting a motive beyond random violence.

Suspect’s Criminal History Raises Concerns

Marshall disclosed that the 17-year-old suspect had previously opened fire on a vehicle at a local high school in 2025. The suspect had served a few months in custody for that earlier incident. Marshall commented on what he described as a lack of accountability in juvenile crime cases, stating, "This event shouldn’t have even occurred. California has gotten extremely soft on accountability with youth."

Status of the Investigation and Community Impact

As of Monday, police said all but one of the shooting victims still hospitalized had been stabilized, while one remained in critical condition. The incident has brought renewed focus on youth involvement in gun violence and the policies governing juvenile offenders in California.

Fairfield, where the shooting took place, is a city of more than 122,000 people located about 45 miles northeast of San Francisco.
