Rapper Snoop Dogg has caused more controversy this week after making some comments on LGBTQ+ inclusivity in children’s films. Citing Pixar’s 2022 movie Lightyear as one example, the rap veteran described the scene as something he “didn’t come in for” and which left him confused in front of his grandson.
“I didn’t come in for this s—, I just came to watch the g—— movie”
Appearing on Sarah Fontenot’s It’s Giving podcast last week, the rapper described how he went to see Lightyear, a spinoff of the Toy Story series, with his grandson. According to Snoop Dogg, this resulted in him being asked a question about a same-sex couple, which he found hard to answer.
The moment in question centers around a lesbian couple in Lightyear, with the film showing a kiss between two women. Disney had briefly removed the moment after its initial release, only to later restore the clip following pushback from employees and LGBTQ+ advocates.
In Snoop Dogg’s case, it appears he was called out by his grandson, who asked in the middle of the movie, “Papa Snoop, how does she have a baby with a woman? She is a woman.”
“So I didn’t know what to tell him at the moment,” Snoop Dogg told the It’s Giving podcast. “Oh s—, I didn’t come in for this s—. I just came to watch the g—— movie.”
Continuing his story, Snoop Dogg said that all he could do was tell his grandson to carry on watching, adding, “They just said she had a baby. They are both women. How does she have a baby? S—. The movie ain’t over with. I’m scared to go to the movies. Like y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”
Asked what most frustrated him, the rapper replied, “It threw me for a loop. These are kids that we have to show that at this age, like, they’re going to ask questions. They are going to ask. I don’t have an answer. And I was just there to go to sleep and watch the movie. That s— woke me up.”
Australian Football League Performance Stands, Fan Backlash
Snoop Dogg’s remarks were not well-received, with liberal fans on social media responding in fury. This is especially the case after the rapper was reported to be one of the headline performers for the Australian Football League’s 2023 Grand Final scheduled for later this year.
PinkNews reported that AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan had come out in support of the rapper’s performance, despite calls to scrap Snoop Dogg’s performance. The AFL has been a vocal proponent of LGBTQ+ inclusivity and anti-racism campaigns over recent years, but there has been no official statement about whether Snoop Dogg would be removed from the list of performances.
In June 2022, when the film was released to theaters, conservatives had complained about the inclusion of a same-sex kiss in the movie. This had led to so much backlash that Disney eventually removed the moment, only to later restore it following internal protests.
Chris Evans, who voices Buzz Lightyear, also came out in defense of the clip at the time. “The real truth is those people are idiots,” he said of critics. “There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward, and embrace the growth that makes us human.”
Lightyear was the result of an effort by the studio to create a new movie with the “real” Buzz Lightyear, the space-age science-fiction character who, in the world of the Toy Story universe, inspired the beloved toy. The effort backfired somewhat, with many reviews critical of the product, and the film grossing just over $226 million at the global box office despite high hopes.
Snoop Dogg’s intervention in the topic, therefore, may be a response to a general feeling that Pixar failed with Lightyear. While the rapper’s Grand Final performance next year remains on the books for now, the comments are unlikely to help Snoop Dogg shake off his reputation as a lightning rod for controversies.
